Introduction to Macromedia Flash

You have already learned in my previous post to how to create websites using HTML. Using various HTML tags you have learn about adding text, images, etc. to your webpage. But, you would have noticed while surfing many of the websites that they contain animate text, graphics, buttons, etc. which sometimes are playing automatically and sometimes animate with the click of a button. How these are created? Flash is the answer to this question. Flash is a software that helps you to create movies with sound effects. Flash is a multimedia and software platform used for creating vector graphics, animations, games and Rich Internet Applications (RIAs) that can be viewed, played and executed in Adobe Flash Player. Flash is developed by Jonathan Gay. It was published by FutureWave Software, which was founded by Charlie Jackson. Let's read this post, how to use this effective tool for making the web pages more interactive.

Components Of Flash 8

Stage: It is the work area which allows you to create drawings or movies. You can also play your animations or movies on it. Content that is within the box in the middle of the stage will be visible when the Flash movie is output. The grey background area outside the box in the middle is 'off-stage'. You can animate content from off-stage onto the main stage area or use a background image that is larger than the main stage to move around as if the camera is panning across a background.

Toolbox: The various drawings tools in this tools window can be used to create graphics, buttons or artwork for your movie. You can add text to the flash movie by using the Text tool from toolbox to add the text.

Panels: Different panels allow you to change the properties of various objects like the Text properties, Fill color properties, etc.

Timeline: Timeline consists of frames and layers which are used to create animations. You can navigate to any frame of your animation to perform editing. Also, Flash has layers just like many other Adobe applications. These appear along the left side of the Timeline.

Layer Window: Allows you to work with the different layers used to create an animation. Layers are in fact the kind of transparent sheets placed one above the other. You can create the different objects of your animation on different layers which will look like a single artwork but while editing any object your other objects on the layers will not be affected.

SYMBOLS

Symbols are the reusable elements, stored in the library such that they can be added to the movie when needed. Symbols can be a graphics, button or movie clips. These are very useful elements as in case you want to have more than one copy of the same object, you need not to recreate the same but you can add as many copies of the symbol from the library.

CREATING ANIMATIONS IN FLASH

Flash animations can be created in two ways:
  1. Frame-by-frame Animation
  2. Tweened Animation
